Dissociation and Lactase Activity in Slow Lactose-Fermenting Bacteria of Intestinal Origin.

چکیده
In 1918 Bronfenbrenner and Davis observed that intestinal bacteria were frequently encountered which failed to show up as lactose fermenters in the routine diagnostic procedure, but which readily did so on subsequent cultivation in media containing lactose in higher concentrations. Studies of the conditions under which the fermentation of lactose by these organisms could be enhanced, with the purpose in view of improving methods for their detection, were reported at that time. Bacteria exhibiting similar variability in fermentation were early described by Neisser (1906) and Massini (1907), under the name Bacillus coli-mutabile. They have been studied more recently by Kriebel (1934), Sandiford (1935), and, with special reference to bacterial variation, by Lewis (1934) and Hall (1935). In the course of continued studies of the metabolism of slow lactose-fermenting bacteria of the Escherichia coli type, we have made some observations which we believe may contribute toward elucidation of metabolic mechanisms which determine lactose fermentation by these organisms. The cultures used in the present study were isolated from unselected human fecal specimens by plating on lactose agar containing China blue-Rosolic Acid (C.R.) indicator (Bronfenbrenner, 1918). Of six samples examined, slow lactose-fermenting organisms were obtained from one, in which they were the predominating type. Several single colony strains of both the slow-fermenting and typical E. coli varieties were transferred

On the "Activation" of the Lactase of Escherichia coli-mutabile.
The studies reported in this paper were directed to an explanation of the puzzling phenomenon that the non-lactose-fermenting Escherichia coli-mutabile contains lactase (Deere, Dulaney and Michelson, 1939). Earlier experiments led us to believe that the antiseptics employed "activated" the lactase which was present, but inactive, in living growing cultures of the non-lactose-fermenting (white) ...
متن کاملLactose digestion from yogurt: mechanism and relevance.
Yogurt is traditionally consumed throughout the world among populations who are seemingly unable to digest lactose. This review provides a historical overview of the studies that show lactose digestion and tolerance from yogurt by lactose-intolerant people. The lactose in yogurt is digested more efficiently than other dairy sources of lactose because the bacteria inherent in yogurt assist with ...
متن کاملGrowth advantage of fast lactose-fermenting mutants of slow lactose-fermenting coliform bacteria in gnotobiotic rats and mice.
When germ-free rats or mice were mono-associated with either Escherichia coli lac(-) (ATCC 15939) or a slow lactose-fermenting coliform (Paracolobactrum coliforme ATCC 11605), fast lactose-fermenting mutants overgrew the parent organisms.
متن کاملThe Lactase Activity of the Intestinal Mucosa of the Dog and Some Characteristics of Intestinal Lactase
The early work on intestinal lactase has been reviewed by Plimmer (1906) and Oppenheimer (1925). No uniformity of opinion was reached regarding the presence and dist, ribution of this enzyme in the intestinal mucosa or in intestinal juice. Without attempting to review these investigations again, it suffices to state that some authors found lactase in the small intestine of young animals. Others ...
متن کاملOligofructose and experimental model of neonatal necrotising enterocolitis.
The gut of preterm neonates is colonised with a paucity of bacterial species originating more from the environment than from the mother. Furthermore, a delayed colonisation by bifidobacteria promotes colonisation by potentially pathogenic bacteria. This may contribute towards the development of neonatal necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). The physiopathology of NEC is still unclear but immaturity ...
